PokerStars’ newly founded Australia New Zealand Poker Tour continued this week in Queenstown, New Zealand and when all was said and done a local man, Danny Chevalier, walked away with the top prize and championship trophy.
The $2,500 Main Event drew 135 entrants for a combined prize pool of $303,750, paying out 18 positions. Chevalier, an 11 year resident of Queenstown was the last player standing at the end of the three day event, $87,435 richer! Entering the final table John Guthrie had one third of the chips in play, but was unable to parlay his early success into a final table victory; crashing out in 6th place. Instead, it was Chevalier who held the Ace – 7 of hearts against his opponents Queen – Ten of clubs on the final hand of the tournament. When Chevalier flopped the nut flush, the tournament was all but over.
The final event of the ANZPT is set to take place in Queensland, Australia on August 5th. Entering the final event, Tony Hachem is the series overall points leader. He lengthened his lead on the field with an 18th place finish this week in New Zealand, worth $3,015.
