The remainder of the starting flights of the 2013 WPT Montreal Main Event wrapped up over the weekend with 357 players surviving to the beginning of the work week. Topping the field is Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, the chip leader after Day 1A, holding 270,800 chips.
As expected, each successive Day 1 flight was larger than the previous one. Not only do players tend to wait for later flights so that they don’t have as long of a gap between Day 1 and Day 2, but this event also permitted re-entries; if a player was knocked out one day, they could try again (for another buy-in) in a subsequent starting day. Thus, the entrant totals get inflated with second chance players.
Day 1B’s 308 entries easily topped Day 1A’s 215, while Day 1C’s 339 just eeked ahead of Day 1B’s field. Thus, the total entrant figure of 862 created a prize pool of $2,738,435 (USD). The top 99 finishers will make the money with half a million bucks going to the winner. The top five players will all earn triple digit payouts, though sixth place will be close, coming in just under $100,000.
This is the second season WPT Montreal has been on the schedule. This year’s field fell significantly short of last year’s, which was 1,173. Canadian Jonathan Roy won the Main Event, earning $784,101
Behind the chip leader Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, there are just three other players above 200,000 chips: Day 1C pace setters Sylvain Siebert and Patrick Braga, Day 1B top collector Derrick Rosenbarger. After them, it is a packed race to fill out the rest of the top ten, with fewer than 12,000 chips separating fifth from tenth place. While all players are noteworthy in their own way, Siebert deserves special mention, as he placed fifth in the 2012 WPT Montreal Main Event.
Day 2 has already gotten underway at the Playground Poker Club and will continue on into the night, through ten 60-minute levels. If the money bubble does not burst today, it will do so early tomorrow.
