After nearly two months, the European Poker Tour (EPT) is back in action, moving from France to Austria with the 2014 EPT Vienna Main Event. Both starting flights are already in the books as Day 2 gets going today. As usual, Day 1B was larger than Day 1A, as 560 players paid the €5,300 entry on Monday, compared with 341 on Sunday. Five more players qualified late via a Last Chance Hyper Turbo Super Satellite and it appears that four more players took advantage of late registration, which was open until the start of play today, thus bringing the total starting field to 910. Leading the 488 Day 1 survivors (plus the additional nine) is Mads Smith Hansen, who, with an even 200,000 chips, was the top dog of Day 1B.
Now that registration is closed for the EPT Vienna Main Event, the prizepool has been set at €4,413,500, with 135 payouts going down to the top 135 finishers. Those who eek into the money will receive €8,700; the winner will take home €816,000.
Thanks to PokerNews.com, we also have an interesting look at the diversity of this tournament. And diverse is the operative word here. A total of 59 countries are represented at the tables, the most (16 percent) coming from neighboring Germany. Austria is next, comprising 9 percent of the field, followed by Russia (8 percent), the United Kingdom (6 percent), and France (5 percent).
Day 2 is scheduled to run for six 75-minute levels and, interestingly, no dinner break. While it won’t be the longest of days for a major tournament, it will be a slog, as the money bubble is not expected to burst, thus providing a bit of mental relief for those who make it that far.
