The 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific (WSOP APAC) AU$10,000 Main Event got going this weekend in Australia as two waves of players started their quest for the final bracelet of the Series (wait, wait…before you say that the High Roller Event is still to be played, I will counter with the fact that the Main Event is the last one to actually finish). On Day 1A, 129 players bellied up to the tables with 70 making through to Day 2, while on Day 1B, 195 took their chances with 117 surviving. Registration still open until the beginning of Day 2, so the final prize pool has yet to be calculated. Barring a huge surge in late registrants, the total field will fall well short of last year’s number of 405.
Leading Days 1A and 1B were Tobias Reinkemeier and Tam Truong, respectively. Reinkmeier’s 171,925 leads all Day 1 survivors; Asa Smith, whose 156,450 chips comprised the second largest stack on Day 1A, also beat the Day 1B chip leader.
Some notables names who remain alive in the WSOP APAC Main Event include Brian Rast, George Danzer, Jonathan Duhamel, Greg Merson, Jeff Lisandro, who won his sixth WSOP bracelet earlier in the WSOP APAC, and Phil Hellmuth, who joined the tournament just before the final level after making a final table the night before.
There are four more days scheduled in the WSOP APAC Main Event, including today’s Day 2, during which the plan is to play six more levels. On Day 3, the timing changes up a bit; rather than playing a set number of levels, the tournament will proceed until sixteen players remain. Then, on Day 4, the tournament will play down to the final six players. At that point, the six finalists will actually take a day off before coming back on October 18th to compete for the title.
