Hailing from Leeds, Yorkshire, British poker player John Duthie originally worked in the television industry as both a director and producer of shows like Silent Witness and Clocking Off. Always an avid poker player, one tournament changed the course of his life forever. In 2000, Duthie won the Poker Million for $1.4 million, which made him the first person to win more than a $1 million in a televised event and launched his career into the poker world.
Since then, Duthie has recorded numerous impressive cashes, including finishing second in the 2003 Euro Finals of Poke Heads-Up Championships for $37.5K. A year later, he won a $300 tournament at the Vienna spring Festival for $20K. He made his first World Series of Poker final table in 2005, finishing ninth in a $3K buy-in No Limit Hold’em event for $55.7K. In 2009, he narrowly missed winning his first WSOP bracelet when he took second in the $10K World Championship Heads-Up event for $386K. More recently, Duthie took 12th in the 2010 North American Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $130K. At the time of writing, he has over $2.4 million in live tournament earnings.
Duthie also has impressive results online, where he plays as Team PokerStars pro ‘JohnDuthie’. He finished second in 2009’s Spring Championship of Online Poker Event 21 for $200K and eighth a few months later in Event 8 of the World Championship of Online Poker for $75K.
Despite his incredible success on the tables, Duthie is most often recognized for using his knowledge of both poker and the television industry to found the European Poker Tour, which has been flourishing ever since. The EPT remains Europe’s biggest poker series and one of the best in the world.
Away from the tables, Duthie is married and has two sons. In his spare time, he enjoys watching movies like On the Waterfront, and reading Al Alvarez.
