UB.com’s Annie Duke hosted a charity tournament benefiting After School All-Stars on Thursday. The $250 buy-in, $100 rebuy event drew celebrities and some of poker’s biggest names and Duke was thrilled with the turnout at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. Tweeted Duke, “We raised over $60K tonight for After School All Stars! Thank to you everyone who came out to support the event and rebuy like crazy.”
One of the biggest superstars to attend the tournament was the always affable Brad Garrett and a couple players were thrilled to see the former “Everybody Loves Raymond” star take a seat at their opening table. “Sitting next to Brad Garrett at the After School All Stars charity tourney. Win,” Tweeted Team UB Pro and rock music icon Scott Ian. Full Tilt Poker pro Karina Jett was equally enthused with her table draw: “I’m at @realannieduke tournament. I have a lot of chips thanks to Brad Garrett.”
Some weren’t as fortunate, including Team UB pro Adam “Roothlus” Levy: “Set over set in the charity tournament. I’ll gladly get that cooler out of the way before the WSOP!”
Speaking of the WSOP, most professional players are gearing up for the year’s biggest poker series, which gets underway on May 28th at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Eugene Todd, never one to hold back from speaking his mind, Tweeted, “7 days til I get to Vegas, I’m gonna rip shit up out there !!!!”
Yuval “Yuvee04” Bronshtein seems more motivated than anyone to play at the 2010 WSOP. The four-time FTOPS winner has been Tweeting about it all week: “Took care of errands at bank and mall, and finally on my way to Vegas for the summer that will change my life.” Bronshtein was looking for a ride to Las Vegas because (for unknown reasons) he shouldn’t be flying, but updated his progress Thursday evening: “Made it to Vegas, and looking forward to an exciting/profitable summer ahead.”
At the inaugural World Team Poker tournament at the Golden Nugget this week, Team Full Tilt’s Jennifer Harman tried to rally the Twitter universe around her United States team: “We’re playing the first World Team Poker Tournament. Root for Team USA.” Todd Brunson, who wasn’t chosen for the team, jokingly replied, “@REALJenHarman I hope you guys lose! Go team Mejico!!!!!!!”
Team USA member Mike Matusow tried to emulate Harman’s patriotism, but “The Mouth” still needs some serious Twitter lessons: “Ship it @TheMouthMatusiw representing Team USA @WorldTeamPoker.” Notice that Matusow spelled his own name wrong. Sorry Mikey, that page doesn’t exist.
The most touching Tweet of the week goes to DoylesRoom’s Zachary “CrazyZachary” Clark, the nephew of the late poker legend Chip Reese: “Every single important decision I have in my life ends up in me asking myself: ‘What would Chip have done?’ Miss him more than ANYTHING.”
As far as the funniest Tweets of the week, we loved this one from Ryan “gutshtallin” Welch: “Dodgers up 4-1. Getting drunk. Spewtermonk looking good. http://twitpic.com/1pkds9.” A painfully boring Tweet, right? Well, here’s the reaction from Welch’s friend, Nick Phillips, who posted this Tweet shortly after Welch’s: “Immed regret teaching @gutshtallin Twitter tricks and how to use the interwebs in general.”
Todd Brunson is fast approaching his father Doyle as one of the funniest poker Tweeters out there. Check out this response to a Tweet by Ali Nejad:
Nejad: “To avoid T-boning some idiot I brake hard, then to avoid getting rear ended, I swerve past and almost get into a head-on.”
Brunson: “So… was this a driving episode or a sexual encounter?”
