Prior to the most recent Latin American Poker Tour event in Lima, Peru, no player had two LAPT titles to their name. However, with his victory in Peru – worth a hefty $250K – Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero became the first player to complete the feat. What’s perhaps more impressive is that this marks back-to-back LAPT victories for Barbero, as he won in Punta del Este, Uruguay just a few months ago. For that victory, Barbero bagged $279K.
On the final hand of play, American Ben Burrows shoved his last 1.2 million chips into the middle with Ad-2d, only to be called by Barbero’s As-7c. When the flop came down 7d-Ks-Qd, Burrows had himself a sweat, but he failed to improve and ultimately busted in second place for $144K. As mentioned, the hand made history as Jose Barbero became the first player to hold two LAPT titles; he has earned over half a million dollars in this year’s LAPT alone.
Throughout the final table, the crown was visibly on the side of Peruvian Erick Cabrera. Play reached three-handed with the hometown boy still looking good, but his fate was sealed by the eventual winner. Barbero limped the small blind and when Cabrera checked, the two saw a flop of Ts-8c-6h. Barbero check-raises Cabrera’s 120K bet to 280K, which Erick called. The turn brought the 3s and Barbero checked-called Canrera’s all-in, triumphantly tabling the nuts, 9h-7c, which crushed Cabrera’s Ah-Tc. Obviously, the Peru native was disappointed, but third place for $88.4K is certainly something to be proud of.
