2010 WSOP Main Event November Nine member Matt Jarvis was eliminated in 8th place. Our cameras caught him at his exit interview just outside the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The fateful hand was a huge rollercoaster of emotions for everyone inside watching the event take place. Jarvis went all-in with Pocket Nines and found himself in the classic coinflip situation against Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi who showed up with Ace Queen suited. The flop was all Mizrachi with Q-Q-8 giving The Grinder flopped trips with top kicker. The crowd was stunned and the hand was all but over at that point as Jarvis drew to only two outs. The turn shocked the entire table and nearly blew the roof off of the theater when Jarvis spiked the nine for a full house. With outs only to a Queen (1) and an Ace (3), it looked like bad news for Mizrachi. The rollercoaster ended with Mizrachi hitting his Ace on the river for the better full house, eliminating Matt Jarvis from Canada.
Outside the theater, Jarvis was joined by his family who continued to cheer his name, bringing him to tears. The emotional toll of the last few months, coupled with the serious illness of his father as documented on ESPN, weighed on Jarvis at the end of the interview.
Matt Jarvis hails from Surrey, British Columbia and was involved in the final hand of the “final ten” during the countdown to the November Nine. Jarvis won a coin flip against eventual tenth place finisher Brandon Steven and came into play fifth in chips at 16.7 million. However, he laid down a hand in a huge pot against Joseph Choeng which crippled him down to a short stack. Making the right mathematical play, Jarvis couldn’t get his nines to hold up and takes home a little more than a million dollars for his Main Event effort.
