Filippo Candio was eliminated from the 2010 WSOP Main Event in fourth place. Our cameras were there to capture Candio’s exit interview press conference from the Rio Hotel and Casino for the World Series of Poker. Candio was the lone representative from Europe, or for that matter, outside of North America.
During the epic November Nine battle, Candio was able to parlay pocket aces into a huge double up against big slick, which Candio used to make some moves, specifically against Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. No doubt that Candio’s big bluffs against Mizrachi, which he would turn over and show is grand fashion, will be part of the drama when the action aires on ESPN. It seemed all night long that Candio and Mizrachi would tangle, which Candio admitted later was part of the gameplan since he considered Mizrachi the best player at the table.
In the hand that eliminated Candio, he shoved all-in preflop shortly after Mizrachi had been eliminated. Candio flipped over King Queen suited to diamonds and was looked up by Joseph Cheong who showed Ace Three of clubs. The flop was disaster for Candio with a A-7-2 flop to give Cheong top pair. A five on the turn sealed the deal for Candio, who walks away with $3.1 million in prize money. Candio’s elimination followed Mizrachi by approximately 30 minutes. Many felt that there was a point in the night where Candio totally slowed down his play and simply folded to fourth place and waited for a premium hand to hopefully double up. The strategy worked to a degree, as Candio did make it to the top four, however, wasn’t able to transition that to a double up to be put into contention for the final heads up match.
Candio said during the interview he intends to keep playing poker, primarily in Europe.
