With the Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow in the United States, six people, in particular, have a lot for which to be thankful. At least 90,000 things, that is (I’m so witty). The final table of the 2014 World Poker Tour (WPT) Montreal Main Event was determined Tuesday and today, the six remaining players will battle it out for the Champions Cup and the CAD $463,432 first prize.
Leading the way is the chip leader to start the day on Tuesday, Jonathan Jaffe. Despite finishing Day 4 with nearly 7.5 million chips, it wasn’t until there were ten players left (Day 4 started with 18), that he really made his move. One of his biggest hands was early on during that final ten when Phillip Hui raised pre-flop to 110,000. Jaffe re-raised to 240,000 and Hui called. On the flop of 9♥-8♦-6♥, Hui checked, Jaffe bet 160,000, and Hui called. The turn was the 6♦ and it went the same way: Hui checked, Jaffe bet 210,000, and Hui called. On the river, the 6♣ was dealt and again, it went check, bet, check, this time for 785,000. Jaffe revealed pocket Kings for a full house and Hui mucked without showing his hand.
One of the most dramatic hands of the day, though, happened right at the outset of Day 4. Maduka Meragal, an early day chip leader, bet 20,000 pre-flop. Ratharam Sivagnanam raised to 65,000 and Kevin MacPhee called. Edward Arnold called, as did Meragal. The flop was J-8-6 and Arnold decided to shove for 348,000 chips. Meragal folded, but Sivagnanam moved all-in himself for over 2 million. MacPhee then quickly called all-in for 480,000. THREE WAY ALL-IN ACTION!
Arnold showed pocket 7’s for a so-so overpair to the low card, but MacPhee had pocket 8’s for middle set and Sivagnanam had pocket 6’s for bottom set, both crushing Arnold. Arnold then hit a set on the turn though, but he still needed quads to beat MacPhee. The river card was a brick, meaning Arnold was gone and MacPhee doubled through Sivagnanam. Because of Arnold’s chips and the rest of the dead money in the pot, though, MacPhee more than tripled up, raising his stack to 1.615 million chips. Coincidentally or not, both he and Sivagnanam made the final table.
