The World Poker Tour (WPT) Fallsview Poker Classic Main Event has simply been racing along. It started with 423 players on Sunday and nearly 300 were eliminated that first day. Yesterday, the field was narrowed from the 132 Day 1 survivors to just a dozen by the end of Day 2. From 423 to 12 in two days. That’s impressive. And Tuesday’s Day 3 will likely be faster, as they are only going to play down to the six-handed final table. Don’t blink, or you’ll miss all of the poker.
Sitting on top of the remaining players is David Ormsby with just over 2 million chips, the only player to finish above that nice, round number. Robert Forbes and Jordan Saccucci aren’t far behind with about 1.9 million and 1.8 million, respectively.
The total prize pool for the tournament is CAD $1,907,544, with CAD $383,407 ultimately going to the winner. A total of 54 players will be paid; the minimum of CAD $8,775 was handed out Monday after Canadian poker pro Mike “timex” McDonald busted out in 55th place as the bubble boy.
Ormsby’s key run came during Level 21, when he busted three out of four players in quick succession. With blinds at 6,000/12,000 and an ante of 2,000 chips, he called Khaly Dang’s pre-flop all-in bet of 80,000 chips. Ormsby held Queens and Dang had A-9; Dang couldn’t find a match for his Ace and was eliminated in 23rd place.
Just a few hands later, on a board of A-T-4, Ormsby bet 105,000 chips, only to see Juno Kim check-raise all-in for 350,000. As it turned out, Kim basically had nothing, while Ormsby had pocket Fours for bottom set. Kim was gone in 21st place.
On the next hand, Ormsby raised pre-flop and Austin Peck moved all-in. Ormsby was on a roll, picking up pocket Kings this time, and easily made the call, picking off Peck’s A-4. At that point, Ormsby was up to 1.9 million chips. His stack eventually climbed well over 2 million, but he doubled-up Jonathan Gray late (pair over pair) to come back down to around 2 million.
The minimum payout today will be CAD $20,377 for 10th through 12th place. As such, David Ormsby is guaranteed to nab at least the second-largest live tournament cash of his career. His best cash came last summer when he finished 257th in the World Series of Poker Main Event, good for USD $34,157. He has almost exactly USD $100,000 in total live tournament earnings.
Day 3 will begin at the Fallsview Casino Resort at noon ET Tuesday as the field of twelve is halved to determine the final table.
