The Mohegan Sun Casino is celebrating the opening of its brand new 42 table poker room in style. The Uncasville, Connecticut property announced on Wednesday that it is running a series of satellites into one of the largest poker tournaments ever held on the East Coast of the United States, a $750,000 Guarantee. The Main Event begins on October 22nd and satellites are already running.
A series of $100 satellites take place between now and next Wednesday, October 8th. One in every 15 players in each satellite will advance to the Main Event. For example, if there are 30 players who enter, two of them will advance; if there are 60 players, four will advance. From October 9th through October 21st, a series of $300 buy-in satellites award one entry to the Main Event for every five players registered. Cash will also be awarded in both of these tournaments according to Mohegan Sun’s standard payout structure.
Here is the schedule for the $1,000 buy-in Main Event, which has two starting days. All times are Eastern:
Wednesday, October 22nd at 11:00am: Day 1A
Thursday, October 23rd at 11:00am: Day 1B
Friday, October 24th at 10:00am: Day 2
Sunday, October 26th at 12:00pm: Final Table
Each player in the Main Event will begin with 30,000 chips and registration will be open through Level 2 of Day 1B. In comparison, each of the satellite events gives 10,000 chips to each entrant. The winner of the $750K Guaranteed is slated to take home over $200,000, which should draw interest from many of the high-profile tournament poker players on the East Coast.
Bruce Dixon, Director of Poker for Mohegan Sun, commented in a press release distributed by the casino, “Our team is excited for Mohegan Sun’s first taste of a high-stakes poker tournament. The addition of our new luxurious 42-table poker room further personifies Mohegan Sun as one of the premier gaming facilities in the world.” The casino hosts recurring $100 and $200 buy-in tournaments in which players start with between 6,000 and 10,000 chips. The Super Stack tournament will be one of the first of its kind for the gaming resort.
Mohegan Sun has also been heavily promoting its entertainment lineup, which includes upcoming appearances by Brooks and Dunn, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, The Who, comedian Robin Williams, Rascal Flatts, Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Kenny Rogers. The southeastern Connecticut property sits on 240 acres and is a regular destination for residents of nearby New York City, Boston, and Hartford.
The Casino of the Wind opened in August and is home to the 42 table poker room. It also holds 28 table games and slots spread across 300,000 square feet of floor space. Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville makes its home in the Casino of the Wind, mirroring the property of the same name found at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. The Casino of the Earth and Casino of the Sky spread further gaming action in Mohegan Sun.
This is Mohegan Sun’s first major promotion associated with its new poker room and it promises to have several more lined up down the road. We would expect the Deep Stack tournament to be popular with skilled poker players. Since the blinds increase gradually in comparison to the enormous stacks, skilled players are able to use their chips with discretion and not feel pressured to act.
