Bad beat jackpots are a part of not only the live poker world but also of the online game. On many occasions, these jackpots can soar to over several hundred thousand dollars. On the CEREUS network’s online site, Ultimate Bet, their bad beat jackpot was recently hit by a player who had only been a part of the site for slightly over a week.

To qualify for what Ultimate Bet calls their “Ultimate Bad Beat Jackpot,” players must be playing on specially declared tables. There is an additional fifty cents taken from every hand played on these tables to increase the jackpot until the kitty is hit. To qualify for the bad beat at UB, a player must have at least quad eights or better get beaten by a better hand.

Once a player hits the jackpot, UB breaks down the prize pool to everyone at the bad beat jackpot tables. Ultimate Bet takes a 10% portion off the top for the site and another 25% to seed the jackpot pool for the next round. After this, the player who absorbed the bad beat takes down 50% of the prize pool, 25% goes to the player who administered the bad beat, and the remaining players at the table get $1000. In addition to this bounty, ALL players who are in the jackpot arena at the time divvy up 25% of the remaining prize pool.

What makes this particular Bad Beat Jackpot score interesting was in whose online poker account it landed in. After playing online poker for only about a year, a nineteen year old Ontario, Canada resident named Reg – whose uses the online moniker QUANTOM47 – decided on January 18th to deposit at Ultimate Bet. Trying to follow in the footsteps of a player who has also been a big winner – UB spokesman and professional poker player Phil Helmuth – QUANTOM47 entered into the jackpot tables on the site. Little did he know that this would net him one of the larger jackpot payouts that the CEREUS Network has offered.

Late Monday evening, the CEREUS Network Ultimate Bad Beat Jackpot had climbed to a staggering $534,132 when the penultimate hand came down. On the Texas Hold ‘Em tables, QUANTOM47 entered into the hand with pocket Queens and improved his hand to quads by the river. Upon the showdown, however, QUANTOM47 discovered that his hand had been crushed by RUSTY_1’s Royal Flush.

What would have been a devastating loss for many turned out to be a huge windfall for those at the tables late Monday night. The bad beat jackpot had been hit with the hand, earning QUANTOM47 a payout of $173,693.20, with RUSTY_1 scoring $86,846.60. Another $86,846.60 went to the players who were on the Jackpot tables and those who witnessed the hand at QUANTOM47’s table earned an additional $1000 for being there.

With the newfound money in his account, QUANTOM47 is not going overboard, however. He plans to give most of the money to his parents to pay down some debts, then use the rest to finance his studies.

Even after the windfall for QUANTOM47, the Ultimate Bad Beat Jackpot, in conjunction with sister room Absolute Poker on the CEREUS Network, has climbed over $200,000 as of press time.
