On today’s Daily Deal: strip poker at the WSOP and Men Nguyen shows why he’s The Master. Also, Annette Obrestad signs on to represent her country, and Phil Laak sets what could be an unbeatable poker record.
Hello, I’m Sean Gibson; welcome to the Daily Deal by Poker News Daily.
The WSOP was definitely eventful this weekend. Men “The Master” Nguyen joins Phil Ivey and Billy Baxter in the exclusive Seven Bracelet club. Nguyen won his fourth Stud bracelet at this year’s Seven-Card Stud World Championship. As a fun side note, the final table had Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi and Vladimir Schmelev facing each other yet again after their recent one-two finish in the $50,000 Player’s Championship.
Event number nine strengthens out belief that 2010 is the year of women – and the year of Brits. The fifteen hundred pot-limit Hold’em bracelet was scooped by English pro James “Flushy” Dempsey. For the ladies, this seems to be the first time in WSOP history that three women have finished in the top thirteen spots in an open event: J.J. Liu, Julie Farkas, and Melissa Hayden came out on the top thirteen out of 657 entrants.
Another WSOP first came about on Saturday when Canadian student Pascal LeFrancois took down the fifteen hundred no-limit hold’em event… and then took off his shirt in celebration. Apparently it’s something of an inside joke between him and his poker posse, who call themselves “Team V-Neck.”
Finally, last night saw the final table of Event eleven play down to the winner with Tom Dwan eventually landing in the final three. There were cheers both for Dwan and against him by his peers and fans as the side action on him winning a bracelet was rumored to be within seven to eight figures. Unfortunately for durrrr he lost heads up and missed out on the chance to win his first World Series Bracelet.
Moving to global poker news, Full Tilt Poker pro Annette Obrestad will join Thor Hansen to play for Norway’s honor in World Team Poker. It has not been announced when these fearsome Nordic players will take to the felts in the Tour’s World Championship, but the poker world expects a good deal of Viking pillaging will take place.
The energizer bunny may be out of a job if his bosses ever find out about Phil Laak. The effervescent poker pro has spent the last week trying to set the new world record for poker endurance. The previous record was an impressive seventy-eight hours, so Laak was aiming for eighty. Once he hit eighty, he decided to go for ninety, and Laak went on to 106 hours… and counting. Last night we were at the Bellagio and filmed an interview with both Laak and Jennifer Tilly which will make its way up on the site very soon.
