PokerStars Releases 2016 WCOOP Draft Schedule

The transition from summer to fall typically means a couple of things, at least here in the United States: the kids go back to school (by the way, my kids started back to school this week, the first week of August – how insane is that?) and American football starts up again! Yay! But poker players outside of the U.S. have another big thing to look forward to: the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP).

Last Friday, PokerStars provided a look at the tentative schedule for the 2016 WCOOP and is asking for feedback from players. As of now – and this likely won’t change – the WCOOP is scheduled to run from Sunday, September 4th through Monday, September 26th. It is noticeably larger than last year’s WCOOP, too, as it now consists of 82 events, a dozen more than in 2015.

As usual, the headline event is the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Championship Main Event, which will be held on the penultimate day of the series and feature a $1.5 million guaranteed prize pool. One re-entry is allowed per player.

PokerStars is also one-upping itself this year. Last year, it was proud to unveil a $51,000 Super High Roller tournament, the most expensive online poker tournament of all-time. That is gone this year, but it is replaced with one that is twice as pricey: a $102,000 Super High Roller event. It will be interesting to see how many entrants it attracts. Oh, there is also a maximum of one re-entry on this tourney, too, because heaven forbid someone pay that buy-in more than twice.

PokerStars also said that it will be running a Mini-WCOOP for the first time ever. As opposed to the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), which has multiple buy-in levels for each event, Mini-WCOOP “….is not in any way intended to be another stakes level of WCOOP itself, but instead a companion series run at 1/100th of the buy-in of most WCOOP Events, at 1/1,000th for some, etc.”

Very possibly meant to replace the Mini-FTOPS now that Full Tilt is no longer an independent poker room, the buy-ins of Mini-WCOOP will range from $1.10 to $11, except for the Main Event, which will be $50.

Below is the proposed schedule – in its fourth iteration – of the 2016 PokerStars WCOOP, as posted on the PokerStars blog.
